How do I apply for a Schengen visa from India, and what are the financial requirements? I would like to know how much funds I need to show on my bank account for a 14-day trip to Europe.
First thing first “Finalizing the Visa Consulate”:If you are planning to tour more than two countries in the Schengen area then apply for visa to the embassy/consulate of the country you will be residing in for most of the travelling days, often referred as the main destination. If two countries have the same number of days then choose the one where you are planning to land or exit.In case you do not have a fixed itinerary (not recommended, though), and you plan to visit several countries in the Schengen area randomly, then apply to the embassy/consulate of the country which you are entering first.Since now you know which embassy you need to apply, next is how to apply and what are the documents required.Long trail of documentation:The most painful part is this, where you need to prepare the documentation. I will keep the checklist simple and prrationale on why they ask for the particular document which will help you understand the significance of it and you can produce a substitute, if possible and required1) Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years and with at least 3 months validity after the scheduled return, passports with observations regarding the front data page are no accepted) with at least two empty pages Nothing much to say, of course you need a valid passport. Since the maximum stay with a Schengen visa can be of 90 days, so 3 months validity is required on the passport. Two blank pages, because one will have Visa sticker and the other page will have Indian immigration stamps and the stamps from the Schengen country where you are landing and exiting.2) 2 passport pictures according to biometric specifications, not older than 6 months Go to the studio and get a photo of the dimension 35 mm in length and 45 mm in height. Your face (the start of the hairline in the forehead till end of your chin) should be between 32 mm to 36 mm. Get the photo in a light background, white is preferred. Detailed information can be obtained here Cheap Tip: Do not go to any fancy studio and spend a bomb on just the photo. The consulate needs a clean and clear photo with the above mentioned specifications (which are very general) and not for featuring you as a playboy model, so save the buck.3) Leave letter of your company (if employed)This letter serves as a proof of return to your own country, so make sure the letter clearly states your designation, since when you are working with the company, leave dates (mandatorily covering your entire stay), date on which you will resume your duties.No-objection certificate of school or university (if student) This is pretty much same as the above.4) Proof of financial status If employed:Payslips of the past three months / employment contract Preither of them, not both. Prthree latest Payslips, as it clearly states how much you are earning and if you are capable of surviving a European trip. This document helps the Visa officer gauge your financial status and also validates that the money earned is legal. If self-employed:Certificate of Proprietorship or other proof of ownership (proof of land title, proof of income from agriculture (sales form) etc.) 5) Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Form 16(Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary)It ensures that all the fund in your bank account is earned legally. Though my experience is that, they hardly care how you have earned the money. If they see there is enough fund available in your account then they are fine.6) Personal bank statement of the past three months with sufficient fundsHere they look into couple of things, first, money in your account is sufficient to cover your entire stay in Schengen area during your travel period. Second, the fund has not been deposited all of a sudden to inflate the available balance. I have written below in detail on how much you should show in your bank account, so keep reading. The bank account statement can be online, but make sure it is a bank statement with details of transaction and not just an account summary. You can show travelers cards (with statement stating available balance), credit card statement, and fixed deposits in your name or joint accounts. If anyone is sponsoring you (like your father or mother), a sponsoring letter addressed to the consulate from him/her and his/her bank statement for last 3 months.7) Proof of accommodation for your entire stay in the Schengen area. This is vital, I have read and heard personal experiences where the Visa has been cancelled due to discrepancy in accommodation arrangements. Make sure you have confirmed hotel bookings with details of the property owner/manager and property details (address). If you are staying at friends/relatives place then copy of their passport (with valid residence permit, in case of non-EU citizen) and an invitation mail will be sufficient as long as you are sponsoring your own stay.8) Flight and transport reservation Again, very vital. Many applications got rejected because of fake bookings. DO NOT make a fake reservation. Search for flights which has minimal cancellation charges and book your flights well ahead of travel date (45-60 days prior) to get a good deal. If you are travelling within Schengen countries then it is advised to show them train/bus bookings for inter-nation travel. One need not show travel details within the country, say if you are travelling within Italy (Rome to Florence) then need not show prior bookings. But if you are travelling from Italy to Switzerland then it is advised to show a confirmed booking.9) Travel Insurance Vital to get visa and also for your own sake. If something unwanted happens and you need to avail medical services then you will be ripped off everything as healthcare is expensive in whole of Europe. The travel insurance must cover Euro 30, 000.00 in case of hospitalization and must cover emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. The list of approved travel insurance companies can be fetched here.10) Proof of civil status Marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card if applicable or Aadhaar Card.11) 1 copy of your passport’s data page Print the first two pages and last two pages of your passport in an A4 size paper.12) Residency proof, if address in the passport falls outside the jurisdiction region of the consulate: Which consulate or which region you can apply? You can apply at the region (North, South, East or West) where you are residing for last 6 months. This is something none of the blogs available in the internet have mentioned clearly. In case you are a domicile of different region and applying at a different region (domicile of Uttar Pradesh, North and working in Bangalore, South for last 3 years), or simply if the address mentioned in your passport does not fall under the jurisdiction region of then consulate then you need to preither a copy of your rent agreement, or a letter from your company HR clearly mentioning your address or some utility bill (electricity, water or telephone bill).13) Duly filled application form Kept at last, because it is important. You can either fill an online application (recommended) or also can fill an offline application. German consulate online application can be filled here , similarly other Countries‡ application form can be found in the respective VFS website. Self-Declaration Form can be found here, required only for German consulate. It is recommended to fill the online application form, it not only saves time at the application center but also legibility is better than the handwritten one.14) Cover Letter A letter addressed to the consulate you are applying. It must contain the followingPurpose of visit (tourism, visiting friends or family)Detailed itinerary If you have a sponsorExplain your personal relationship with your sponsor and the reason why they will be sponsoring your tripIf you cannot submit any of the required documents, write about the reasons why you cannot submit and explain alternative documents that you may have submittedYou can also mention the reasons why you will not overstay the visa period (employment, personal assets, etc.), explain your rootedness to the countryCool Tip: You can attach the itinerary separately which will enhance the readability of your letter.Write to me at universallocalite@gmail.com if you require a specimen cover letter or template of itinerary, I will be more than happy to help you with one.Visit my blog-How to obtain a Schengen Visa-Rules and tips
Do you think millennials have been raised and taught for failure?
I think what you are suggesting in your question is thatthere is an issue with what we teach kids in schools in the United States. And you would be more than super correct about that.Sex education is a JOKE.We don’t teach TYPING anymore. We don’t educate people on the use of COMPUTER APPLICATIONS.We don’t freaking teach people HOW TO FILL OUT TAX FORMS.We don’t teach people HOW TO FILL OUT COLLEGE APPLICATIONS.We don’t teach people HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR MEDICAL INSURANCE.We don’t teach people HOW TO APPLY FOR LOANS.We don’t teach people BASIC LAWS THAT THEY NEED TO KNOW.WE don’t teach people HOW TO VOTE IN CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS.I could go on and on and on and on.School does so very very little to prepare people to enter the “adult world,” it’s sickening. However, I think this has been largely a problem for a long time now, not just with people teaching millennials, but virtually every generation.
What are good resources to become a US tax expert?
Tax consultants or tax advisors, are experts in tax law, planning and compliance. They serve individuals as well as businesses by staying current on new tax law and positioning taxpayers for short and long term tax optimization. A tax consultant typically expands on the role of tax preparer. While tax consultants prepare tax returns, they also often work closely with clients throughout the year to ensure client tax liability is minimized. Tax consultants are strong written and verbal communicators able to explain tax law and strategies in a way that is accessible and easy for clients to understand. Tax consultants work for public accounting firms, law offices, financial consulting firms and many even have their own independent tax preparation and consultation businesses. In all settings, tax consultants can be expected to perform duties that include:Conducting research on tax lawsStrategizing with clients to minimize tax liabilityCommunicating with clients to explain tax issuesPreparing tax returnsEstate planningKeeping clients compliant with their tax obligationsTax consultants generally hold bachelor’s degrees in accounting, finance or a related field, however, because no formal certification is required, individuals often take on advisory roles after years of experience in another tax related profession. Ultimately, professionals with both formal education and tax experience are best positioned for these careers. Obtaining licensure as a CPA demonstrates the formal education and professional experience needed to support a future as a successful tax consultant. However, Internal Revenue Service employees may have years of experience, yet no formal education and be very well suited for advisory roles allowing them to obtain positions as tax consultants because of their relevant experience alone.Related:Sales tax consultants
Can you pay to have your refund rushed but paid out of your tax return when filling?
Neither the IRS nor, as far as I know, any US state with a state income tax, has any sort of program that allows you to pay extra to have your return processed expeditiously. All returns are processed in the order received (more or less), and the IRS provides no guarantees on when your refund will be issued, if indeed ever.If you pay a tax preparer to prepare your return, the preparer may offer you to pay a fee to receive your refund “faster”. This is what is called a “refund anticipation loan”: the preparer is offering to give you a short-term loan, similar to a payday loan, in exchange for you handing over your tax return to them. They will deduct fees and interest up front.Refund anticipation loans are almost always a bad deal for the consumer, there are often large fees on such loans and the interest rates can exceed 100% APR. This is an abusive form of predatory lending. Many states have laws that attempt to curtail such practices, but preparers violate these laws on a depressingly frequent basis. State Attorneys General and other consumer financial advocates regularly warn consumers against refund anticipation loans. See, for example, Illinois Attorney General - Refund Anticipation Loans:The busy tax season often brings a wide variety of scams aimed at defrauding consumers of their hard-earned tax refunds. Attorney General Madigan is warning consumers to be wary of refund anticipation products that promise a faster refund. Tax preparers pitch a variety of these products ‡ tax refund anticipation loans, checks or debit cards ‡ as a way to receive a tax refund instantly. In reality, they are short-term loans that often saddle consumers with high interest rates and fees that are deducted from their tax refund. It’s Your Refund—Here’s How to Keep More of It!You probably do not need a tax refund loan. If you file your tax return electronically, you can get your refund very quickly—in approximately two to three weeks—without getting a loan. You can find an organization willing to help you prepare and file your taxes for free by calling the Center for Economic Progress at 312-252-0280 or visiting this website for resources near you: http://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxp....You can find IRS policies regarding refund anticipation loans here: Tax Refund Related ProductsMy advice is to simply file the return. If you file early enough, you’ll get your refund faster than you probably expected. It’s not worth the cost and added risk of a refund anticipation loan to get a smaller tax refund a few weeks sooner.
My employer made me fill out a w-9 he pays me by the hour and with holds taxes from me this isn't legal is it either he needs to have me fill out a w2 or not with hold taxes am I correct about this?
Think of the W-9 as a vehicle between a pay provider or a vendor and an independent contractor. When a W-9 is involved, we typically do not use the terms "employer" or "employee". Rather we use the terms vendor and independent contractor. If you have filled out a W-9, then the person paying for labor sees the worker as an independent contractor, not an employee. In this case you get a 1099-MISC and not a Form W-2 at the end of the year. (People and companies that pay for labor often prefer to pay workers as independent contractors, instead of as employees, because the payor does not have to pay employment taxes or prother benefits.) If you fail to fill out and pra completed W-9 when one is requested of you, then the person paying for labor is required to hold back part of the pay to the independent contractor (mandatory back up withholding). However, if you have provided a signed W-9 back to the person paying you, then you are correct, the payor should not be withholding anything (unless you have more than one single status as a worker for this company?) If you have filled out and returned only a W-9 to the person who pays you, and know for sure you have not also filled out a W-4 (to be treated as an employee and later receive a W-2), and you can also produce paycheck stubs that show withholding for Social Security and Medicare, state taxes (FICA, MED, etc.), then you should raise this issue with your tax preparer and ask if you should consider filing a Form SS-8 when you complete your tax return. Better yet, print out and bring a Form SS-8 into work now, and ask to speak with someone in human resources, personnel, or the accounting office at the company about that Form SS-8. An SS-8 form should sufficiently scare the bejesus out of the company. If some foul play is at work here, the concern over a Form SS-8 will make people sit up and pay attention. If it is something else (like some of your work is as an employee and other more independent projects are paid out to contractors instead of employees,) then an SS-8 will still be effective... the person paying for labor will go out of their way to then be as clear as possible in explaining their actions. Two final thoughts: 1) Remember, it does not matter what they are doing or not doing, or whether it is legal or questionable. It only matters what you can demonstrate or prove. If you don't get real, live paychecks or at least a stub or advice of deposit that shows withholding, then it will be difficult for you to demonstrate what has or is happening. 2) Sit with a professional tax preparer this coming tax season - and just pay for the service. If you've never seen or filled out a Form SS-8 before, now is not the time to venture it on your own. I can probably figure out how to change the oil in my car by myself. I go to a mechanic for an oil change for a reason.
Why don't high schools teach students how to prepare a basic income tax return? Or at least, why don't they inform students about income taxes?
I see other answers here saying that they do teach their kids explicitly how to do taxes. I don’t.Why?Most kids don’t find it that interesting, and don’t retain much of what we teach. This is often the answer to “why don’t schools teach us stuff we can use?” Many well intentioned teachers try to instill real-world skills into their students, but students don’t usually find it engaging, and most forget it by the time it comes to use it.It’s because stuff doesn’t feel relevant‡ until it’s relevant. Once you realize you need the information, you suddenly become motivated, and you learn it fairly quickly (as long as you possess the prerequisite skills, more on this later.)It’s not that we shouldn’t try to teach relevant skills, but to actually add educational value, it needs to be skills that students are interested in picking up.Doing your taxes ISN’T THAT DAMN HARD.Seriously. It’s not.Time consuming? Yes. Frustrating, it can be. Annoying the other 364 days where you had to keep careful records? Sure. But actually doing taxes is not that bad unless you are a small business owner. You get your (sometimes free) tax software and answer all the questions and fill in appropriate boxes. It’s so easy that…Parents could teach their kids in an afternoon. We’re supposed to be teaching your kids the stuff that takes lots of time, or that you can’t.Teach your kids to cook.Teach your kids to fold laundry.Teach your kids to do their taxes. They’ll learn it better from you anyway. We don’t have time for that.Yes, I understand that not everyone comes from a good home, but we don’t have time to teach all life skills in the classroom.Teaching kids how to do taxes isn’t financial literacy.Oh, I definitely teach exponential growth, and the danger of high interest loans and credit cards. I try to instill numeracy. We talk a little about budgeting, saving, and investing. But teaching kids how to fill out a form is not preparing them to handle their finances.Tax law changes constantly. Anything we teach will be obsolete in 5 years. We teach students enough material that will be obsolete. No need to add to the list. And finally…We give students all the prerequisite skills to do their taxes.Math classes are constantly:asking students to take percentagestransferring numbers from here to thereoptimization problems (how can I get the biggest return)forcing students to follow specific directions for complicated processesMath is abstract. We don’t cover all possible applications. But we try to prepare students for anything by exposing students to lots of potential applications. We’ve got a lot to teach. We also prspecific financial math classes if students want to take them. Please just let me teach Algebra.
How is financial aid calculated?
The college adjudicates the financial determination for the college’s money and acts as an agent for the Federal money.Every US citizen, permanent resident and legal refugee will fill out the FAFSA forms (FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in order to qualify for any Federal aid, and any US college that awards aid wants to take advantage of the Federal aid first. Many of the private colleges will ask the applicant to fill out the PROFILE (Apply for College Financial Aid) forms (that cost money to fill out) and use the extra information that is gathered to determine the college’s expectation of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Those forms require the student to fill out some of the information and All of the parents to fill our information. Without complete forms, there is No financial aid…. None …. Zero…. no matter how poor you are. Therefore, it is Essential that your parents fill out those forms. You MUST have your parents fill out the forms, unless you are 24 years old or older, a member of the US military or honorably discharged, or legally married. However, if you are married, then your spouse must fill out the forms with you.The total cost (TC) of the college is the tuition, mandatory fees, room, board, books and supplies and some miscellaneous expenses.Your need for financial aid is TC - EFC. You can Not negotiate on the EFC. It is what the college perceives it to be. Therefore, be very careful and honest in filling out the FAFSA and PROFILE forms. If you are considered an US applicant then you must (generally) submit your latest Federal Tax forms (for your parents and for you) to the college. If you or your parents own a “small business”, be prepared to be GRILLED for extra information as almost every college believes families Hide money in a small business. I have known families that had to produce evidence that the family was not Hiding money in younger siblings bank accounts or investment accounts. Be prepared for a Lot of forms. If you are an international applicant, then you may Not fill out the FAFSA forms. And the PROFILE or other forms that you and all your parents fill-out must be verified by an independent agency in your country that is trusted by the college. Small business owners could be haunted even more if international.Once the level of financial aid is determined, the US applicants are Expected to take a Federal Pell Grant. And even if the college says otherwise, they will structure your “aid” to almost force an US applicant to take a Federal Direct Loan (they have their ways….)All colleges expect the student to Earn money each Summer (including the Summer before you start college). Period. Many colleges also expect the student to earn some money during the academic year (one way to “force the US student” to take a Federal Direct loan). If you get financial aid from a college, then Expect to graduate with some amount of student loans. That is because you must apply for financial aid Each year, and “surprise, surprise”, I have seen Increase the EFC for rising juniors and seniors…….. (therefore reducing the amount of college money provided to you as a grant).Given that a Private US college can cost as much as $300,000 for four years, most students need to apply for financial aid. Some colleges will award some Merit Scholarship money to excellent students, however the elite Private US colleges (for the most part) do Not award any merit scholarships.Athletic scholarships are a whole different story.Enjoy the process. All the best.
